Program notes: Stages of Inspiration evokes a creative process, and more specifically, the experience of writing a musical composition. It begins in the whole tone scale, with the direction “thoughtful and searching” as ideas are slowly forming. After the main material is introduced you’ll hear it change as different variations are explored. Then excitement starts to build, representing the exhilarating feeling of ideas coming to life. More and more versions of the themes are tried as a deadline approaches, it seems there are endless possibilities of what to write next. “Excited and nervous” shifts to “frustration” as all the ideas from the piece layer together, clashing as so many possibilities are frantically tried at once. It continues to build until it crashes to a halt. Silence, then slowly “recentering” as inspiration returns. More reflective echoes of the melodies from before slowly transform into the “joyful and triumphant” ending. The main theme is stated again in another mode representing what has been created and the emotions of hearing the finished work. Throughout this creative journey, the same few themes evolve in many different stages: from the first inspiration to the final product.

Program notes: Home: Cherished Moments Together represents the pleasant parts of being home together as a family: my two moms, brother and me. We are very close and I’ve missed being home together. We’ve had to travel for my treatment for cancer most of the past few years, often one of my moms has to stay behind for work, and as my brother and I grow-up our commitments increase. I wrote this piece to capture our connection as a family; the ordinary sounds of home; and some special times, traditions and memories we have together. This includes fond memories from our first house together: the lively waltz-like section evoking my brother and I playing together when we were younger, running and dancing through the house, out of breath as we spun around. The piece uses different recorded sounds reminding me of home and family such as: clocks, cooking, dishwasher sounds, shuffling cards, rain on the roof, creaking floor boards, toothbrushes, an airplane in the distance and footsteps moving through the house.

Program notes: This music is inspired by a world of magical creatures that my brother and I imagined and created. The creatures are called Doncys, pronounced like donkey. Doncys have many rituals, traditions and structures, some of which are depicted in this piece. “Overture from an Imagined World” is an opening and foreshadowing to a larger, opera like, work I have imagined writing about this world. You’ll hear an opening fanfare, setting the scenes for the story to come; a section where the Doncys loudly introduce their places in hierarchy and their barn; a section of mischief, introducing the material for Trickery, a highly ranked Doncy barn; later in the piece listen for parts of my brass quintet “Dirge from an Imagined World” representing these creatures’ complex rituals around death; followed by a more gentle, youthful, almost fairy like, section with sparkling in the piano representing magic; the overture ends with the opening rhythms, imagine the opera that’s about to begin!

Program notes: A Year with Cancer begins with disruption, a building cacophony of ringtones, and voices layering. One day normal, the next on crutches and having diagnostic scans and medical appointments, days later I learned I had cancer. The violin represents me navigating this. Listen for unanswerable questions before diagnosis, sounds of MRIs and CTs, pumps and other beeping sounds, the violin slowing as it sickens from chemo, and echoes of the music I played and listened to. Also joy and resilience and a soaring, bittersweet melody representing the last time I ever ran – the night before leg surgery. Titanium replaced bone in my leg, making running unsafe. Pre-op questions and the sounds of drilling and sawing follow, the violin awakens in pain but soon finds determination and the sounds of crutches return. Near the unconcluded ending, the constant ear ringing caused by chemo joins, to stay forever in my head.

Program notes: Escape expresses going through something hard and then escaping into theworld, nature and being free again. For me this is chemotherapy and cancer, then leaving the hospital and being able to go outside again, where I can go backpacking, hiking and camping with my violin. Listen for the transition or “escape” when the whole orchestra opens up into a major key.

In spring of 2023 I was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, I’ve undergone a variety of intensive chemotherapies and surgeries. When I’m stuck in the hospital for long periods of time having unpleasant treatments, it’s my music and love for nature that keeps me going and inspired. I dream of escaping and being free. So I wrote this piece both to express the struggles and difficulties of what I’ve been experiencing as well as the beauty, excitement and sheer joy I dream of when I “escape.”.

Program notes: Misty Oasis in Scorching Heat was inspired by a backpacking trip we took near Mt. Rainier in a heat wave during forest fires. You could hear the rumbling of glaciers melting and rivers roaring. It was very hot but there was a little waterfall that was cooler, the “misty oasis.” The temperature change between the waterfall and the air around it was very sudden, like walking out of an oven into a refrigerator! I try to depict the different temperatures and sudden changes through my music: starting out near the waterfall, where birds chirp and it is misty and cool; then the section that represents when my brother’s leg got cut deeply and we had to hike out; the slower hike out, more plodding in the heat and smoke; and the big ending with material from almost every section all fitting together at the same time.

Program notes: Seascape describes beaches on the coast where I’ve backpacked annually since I was 3, bringing violin and staff paper as I got older. Seascape is made of two movements each describing one of the beaches and their different moods, weather and tides.

I. Tide Pools starts with a calm low tide; herons fish from rocks; seals swim in the distance; birds soar overhead; in the tide pools there are many colorful creatures and plants. Then the tide rushes in and around the rocks and it all disappears. Later, afternoon sun sparkles on the water and the sand is warm.

II. Moods of the Sea evokes the sometimes sudden changes in feeling and weather: a music-filled evening looking out at waves rolling in under a vast, beautiful sunset; out at sea where huge storm waves crash against the rocks in the pounding rain; then more gradually back to the calm waves before dawn.

Program notes: Dirge from an Imagined World is based on a piece that I composed and my brother and I used to sing when we were pretending to be magical creatures we made up called Doncys (pronounced like donkeys). Doncys sing a version of this piece as a community ritual and dirge when a Doncy has died. This piece is in a form reminiscent of a 21st century take on a Baroque fugue. In the middle there is a big climax where the dead Doncy is thrown into a huge fiery pit that consumes them. This dramatic ritual is followed by two approximately 6 second long silences. There are other moments of silence in this piece as well. The silences in this dirge are as important and a part of the music as the notes I wrote; the Doncys use silence to honor the Doncy who has died.

Program notes: Frogs that live in a stream near Mount Rainier wake to a spring morning after a long winter. They are enjoying the day when a coyote tries to eat them! They soon outhop/swim it and spend the rest of the day swimming, catching bugs and watching the evening sunset.
